Antipodes 2

Sun, 29 Apr 2012, 10:00 (DS) = 02:00 (MDRS) = 20:00 (NZ), --> that means Night-EVA for Utah, but we do not expect a significant problem with that.
the Antipodes 2 (OPS/D directing the MDRS crew) will be a CVE-experiment, similar to the Terbium dotation, but probably like our CVE.07 in Austria.

OWF is performing Terbium luminescence {*}assay with *NASA/Jet Propulsion Lab: Studying contamination vectors and germination rates of water/soil samples within the cave. KiwiMars 2012's experiment same we just call it biosecurity - contamination vectors and germination rates of water/soil samples within the MDRS area.

ANTIPODES 2 (after ANTIPODES 1, OPS/D directs MDRS)

  • t -30 min: establishing contact between MCC Wellington, MDRS & OPS/D - verifying broadband access, go ahead from both Flight Directors
  • t -0: Upon MCC/W "GO", MDRS crews commences experiment, OPS/D follows the procedures
  • t +10 min: loss of satellite signal, "no connection" between MDRS and MCC/W, requesting hand-over to OPS/D by MDRS
  • t +11 min: OPS/D monitors MDRS crew, has a few minutes to adjust and get ready: verify connection to MDRS
  • t +15 min: OPS/D takes over and continues experiment, e.g. sample site selection based upon video data
  • t +30 min: OPS/D concludes procedure, MCC/W or MDRS Habcom resumes operation and continuous experiment.
  • t +45min experiment closure for OPS/D - opportunity for informal communication.

MCC/W monitors at all times and takes over if necessary.

7.11. Antipodes / Kiwispace

Synopsis:

OEWF / KiwiSpace Joint Operations Simulation, a switch of Mission Support between the Dachstein field test, the MDRS Kiwispace mission and their Mission Control Center in Wellington/New Zealand.

Institution (PI):

KiwiSpace New Zealand / OeWF (joint operations)

Responsible on-site:

Austria: Gernot Groemer/OeWF; Utah: Haritina Mogosanu/Kiwispace

Antipodes is an operations experiment, where we assume a loss of communication between the Mission Support Center on “Earth”, whereas a parallel landing party on the other side of Mars will take over the coordination of an ongoing Extra-Vehicular Activity via their habitat, relayed via a satellite in Martian orbit.

Participants

KiwiMars 2012 crew at the Mars Desert Research Station, Utah
KiwiMars 2012 Mission Control Center, Carter Observatory, Wellington/New Zealand
OeWF field team, Dachstein caves, Austria

Scenario

After losing the communication to “Earth” (e.g.satellite is out-of-range), a request is sent to the MDRS and/or MCC Wellington to take over operations for an ongoing experiment within the cave. The telemetry data are relayed to MDRS / MCC Wellington for approximately 30 min.

In a second step, a similar handover is done, where the Dachstein field OPS coordinates an experiment at the MDRS (either EVA or IVA, tdc).

The details of the experiment are to be defined, most probably it will be related to the biological sampling activities.
