I fixed the coffee machine by cleaning it with a mix of acetic acid as suggested by mission support. I found the acetic acid kept in the chemical storage area downstairs and mixed up a 3% solution. I put 30mL into a 1L container. I poured this mixture into the coffee machine and ran it through three times. I put water through the machine next a couple of times and it's been working well making coffee since then. Since I'm not that familiar with using chemicals (being a mechanical engineer) I got Jen's advice on how to deal with the acetic acid. She taught me the saying "Here lies Joey still and flaccid he added water to his acid" to remind me that adding water to acid rather than acid to water is dangerous since it can splash out and cause injury. It's also safest to clean the container holding the acid by putting it into water rather than running water over it.
There was also a problem with the furnace heater door coming off again. I think the door is slightly damaged so it doesn't fit in place properly. I used a few pieces of gaffer tape to fix.
